TURKEY FOOD AND CULINARY

Istanbul is renowned as one of the oldest cities in the world, steeped in rich history and boasting a vibrant food culture that is truly exhilarating. Undoubtedly, the primary allure of visiting Istanbul lies in its culinary offerings, making this Istanbul travel guide a must-read for food enthusiasts like yourself.

I came across a fascinating publication by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey that delves into the rich history and cultural significance of Turkish cuisine.Exploring the culinary landscape of Istanbul, one must consider a variety of factors

:History and Empire - Istanbul stands as one of the most significant and influential cities in world history, serving as the heart of the Ottoman Empire for centuries. This rich history and imperial rule laid the foundation for the development and advancement of Royal palace cuisine

.Abundance of Natural Ingredients - Turkey is blessed with a diverse array of natural ingredients, thanks to its varied climates and environments. Plants, spices, seafood, and animals thrive in Turkey, contributing to the evolution of Turkish cuisine.

Strategic Geographical Location - Situated as a bridge between Asia and Europe, with connections to the Middle East, Turkey has long been a global trade hub. This strategic position has allowed for a fusion of ingredients and flavors from around the world to influence

Turkish cuisine. These factors have played a crucial role in the evolution of Turkish cuisine, offering insight into the exceptional flavors that await you in Istanbul. As you embark on your culinary journey in this vibrant city, you will quickly discover the delectable array of dishes that showcase the rich history and diverse influences that have shaped Turkish food.

Mandabatmaz

I’ve been a little obsessed with it. Mandabatmaz, a Turkish cafe off of Istiklal street, serves excellent Turkish coffee that’s full of chocolatey flavor and cardamom. If you’re shopping at Istiklal street, this is a cafe you want to make sure you don’t miss. Address: Istiklal Cad./olivia Geçidi 1/A, Beyoglu/Istanbul – Europe, Turkey; Open hours: 9:30 am to 12 midnight daily.

Çakmak Kahvalti Salonu (breakfast)  One of My favorite place located in Besiktas. Along with the full spread of cheese, olives, kaymak, and bread, I ordered the eggs with tender beef cooked in its own fat. It was crazy good, especially with bread and all the Turkish breakfast side dishes

Sehzade Cag Kebap (kebab) – Cag Kebap is a type of kebab from Eastern Turkey that cooked on a horizontal spit (unlike the typical vertical spit), and if you love food, you should try this option

Tarihi Karadeniz Döner (doner kebab) – this is the best doner kebab in Istanbul, and after eating there, I have zero arguments. Along with being the most gorgeous vertical roll of meat you’re likely to ever see in your life, the taste of the meat was beautifully charred and juicy at the same time. You can get a doner sandwich, or you can go bigger and get a plate of carved doner meat with bread on the side.

16 Roof : Situated atop the Swissôtel, 16 Roof restaurant boasts stunning views of the Bosphorus.  The chef produces contemporary world cuisine with unique flavors as well as desserts; from refreshing lemongrass and ginger sorbet to mouthwatering caramelized banana and cinnamon tart with caramel ice cream. Each course of the tasting menu is complemented by an appropriate Turkish wine.

Maiden’s Tower  :  The signature of Istanbul, Maiden’s Tower stands proudly at the intersection of the Bosphorus where the two continents of Asia and Europe meet. The tower’s history stretches back 2,500 years, with a wealth of legends surrounding its place in this extraordinary city.  With delicious breakfasts and international lunch and dinner menus, Maiden’s Tower can be enjoyed at any time of day. Live music and a friendly mood will accompany your meal, and with the Bosphorus on all sides, the views are magical. Indoors in the winter or outdoors in the summer, for a truly bespoke experience, ask for exclusive booking options and enjoy Maiden’s Tower in unique style.

Mikla    ; Located on the roof of the fashionable Marmara Pera hotel, Mikla boasts sublime views over Istanbul including the Hagia Sophia and the Topkapi Palace. With retro chrome furniture and a bar made from wooden railroad ties, Mikla is urban, sleek and stylish, and recently became one of the few Istanbul restaurants to hold a Michelin star. Chef  merges Turkish and Scandinavian cooking techniques, producing delicacies such as raw grouper with olives and lemon, and a Turkish coffee vanilla slice with raspberry sorbet. The roof terrace bar of Mamara Pera is perfect for pre-dinner drinks. Take in soft jasmine scents and sip on a generously measured martini as you watch the sun set on this historic city.
